“Thinking traps” is another term for cognitive distortions or irrational thought patterns. When these wrong thoughts arise, a child or teen can develop beliefs that aren’t always true. An example would be a kid focusing on the negative aspects of a situation and ignoring all the positives.
We created this helpful resource for parents, teachers, and mental health professionals to explain the most common thinking traps with children and adolescents. While not shown on the poster, strategies to let go of these thoughts would also be great to discuss.
